Video-of-the-Week

We’ve finally posted Dr. Barbara MacLeod’s 2018 lecture at the Anomaly Archives. See below for details…

Book-of-the-Week

This week we feature one of my favorite books by one of my favorite British researchers … published by her Institute of Psychophysical Research. It also has one of my favorite book covers…

“The term ‘out-of-body experience’ was introduced in the 1960s by Celia Green … While there had been stories of out-of-body experiences for centuries, Green was the first to systematically examine a large number of first-hand accounts, from more than four hundred people …”

Video-of-the-Week

UFO Garage PodcastWe recently discovered a new Austin-based UFO podcast / vodcast from a couple of local Austinites. It’s called UFO Garage Podcast! They just started back in June of 2019 and they are having a blast learning all about UFOs and becoming a part of the larger UFO community. Apparently, they had just discovered the Anomaly Archives a few days or weeks before I discovered them – so they were very excited when I reached out to say, “Howdy!” Then a few days later they came by the Anomaly Archives and did a short impromptu interview while checking out the collections. Within a few hours, they’d edited together the footage and posted the video. Check it out below in our VIDEO section!

Book-of-the-Week

This week’s book of the week is one of many by author and researcher Eugenia Macer-Story that we have on-file in the Anomaly Archives. I never had the chance to meet her (she was one of the speakers scheduled to present at my 2001 National UFO Conference) but was glad to know her through her writings and email communications and the one audio interview I did with her in 2008 for my Blue Rose Report webcast. She passed away in December of 2013.

If you aren’t familiar with her work you should check out this article by “WHAM” titled: The Yankee Magick of Eugenia Macer-Story.
Eugenia Macer-Story – Eugenia was a resident of Woodstock, New York. Born in Minneapolis, MN on January 20, 1945. B.S., Speech/Theater, Northwestern University, 1965. M.F.A., Columbia University, Playwriting, 1968. Professional psychic with private practice and author. She passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2013.

Eugenia Macer-Story was a poet-playwright and visual artist whose work has been published and exhibited internationally. Her poetry chapbooks have been part of the Poets House poetry publication showcase for a number of years. She also wrote books on the supernatural and UFO experiences and her articles on the supernatural have been published in UFOs and Supernatural magazine and UFO magazine.

Book Of The Week

Dark Frontier

by Eugenia Macer-Story

“A modern alchemical journal on the occult & supernatural, including interdimensional participation of the reporter in events ranging from apparitions as artifacts on 35mm film right on through a spectrum including a CIA bibliography on flying saucers, a report by a physics grad student that outer space is not symmetrical, conjuration of trickster spirits and other indications that the real frontier of knowledge is not the reflection of distant stars as we see them with limited equipment but the dark frontier of the unexplained qualities of atomic mass and consciousness, as these might be functionally related.”

ABOUT AUSTIN ARCHIVES BAZAAR

Austin Archives Bazaar is a FREE biennial event organized by the Archivists of Central Texas since 2014. Austin Archives Bazaar 2020 will take place at Trinity Hall, 311 E. 5th Street, on April 19, 2020. Visitors will have the opportunity to chat with over 20 local archival repositories who table at the event, hear speakers share stories about their discoveries with archives, learn best preservation practices, win door prizes, and more!

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING AN ARCHIVAL REPOSITORY

  1.       For most repositories, a list of their policies and procedures will be available online in some form. Spend time looking over the archives’ website before your visit. Look for a “Plan Your Visit” link which will prepare you for what to expect, including registration steps and what items are prohibited from the reading room. Many archives have locker systems available to store items, but it’s not a bad idea to travel light.
  2.       Be mindful of photography restrictions. Many archives allow the use of cameras, laptops and other personal digital devices, but restrictions may exist.
  3.       Handle all materials carefully and keep the materials in order.
  4.       Be prepared to pay for photocopies.
  5.       Once you find materials to work with, talk to an archivist about how you will be using the item(s) so they can clarify any restrictions on use or copyright violations.

First Anomaly Adventure Club Meeting – February 8th, 3-5pm

“Bring ‘em Back Amused. The Tale of Frank Buck and his Monkey Mountain.”

There beats in the hearts of many the yearning for adventure, and so, in 1911, to satisfy that need “Adventure!” magazine was created. It was filled with thrilling tales of travel, intrigue, and exotic occurrences.

It spawned a club of like-minded people who gathered to revel in the idea of adventure and all its tantalizing trappings — the Adventurer’s Club. Adventurers gathered every month to share stories of excitement and glory. Many interesting people have crossed the Club’s threshold, and it is high time that their stories be shared with a wider audience.

One of these adventurers was once a household word and an American celebrity whose very name was a byword for all things exotic and thrilling. This was Frank Buck of Gainesville, Texas, an animal collector who cared so deeply about the animals he rounded up for zoos that his motto was, “Bring ‘em back alive.” His passion for animals led him to fame and fortune, movies and mayhem. The things he managed to do and experience in his lifetime will both astonish and amuse.

To find out more about this long-lost yet fascinating character from the recent past , please join us for “Bring ‘em Back Amused. The Tale of Frank Buck and his Monkey Mountain.”

The Anomaly Archives Adventurer’s Club meeting will be held from 3pm to 5 pm on Saturday, February 8th, 2020.

Book Of The Week

Inside the Black Vault:
The Government’s UFO Secrets Revealed

by John Greenewald Jr.

“In 1996, John Greenewald, Jr. began researching the secret inner workings of the U.S. Government at the age of fifteen. He targeted such agencies as the CIA, FBI, Pentagon, Air Force, Army, Navy, NSA, DIA, and countless others.

Greenewald utilized the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) to gain access to more than two million pages of documents. This archive includes information relating to UFOs, the JFK Assassination, chemical, biological, and nuclear weapons, and top secret aircraft. He took the millions of pages, and over the course of more than two decades, has built an archive known around the world, as The Black Vault.

Inside The Black Vault: The Government’s UFO Secrets Revealed takes you on a journey within the secret world of unidentified aerial phenomenon that has plagued the military since at least the 1940s. Declassified records prove that the UFO topic is one of the most highly classified and most elusive subjects the U.S. Government has ever dealt with. Each chapter explores various agencies and their documents, and Greenewald breaks down the meaning of why some of the most important documents are relevant to proving a massive cover-up.

Along with declassified documents, Greenewald outlines the struggle it took him to get them. No other topic has proven so difficult, in more than 8,000 FOIA requests that he has filed. He explores why that might be and meets skeptics and debunkers head on, outlining why some of their more prominent rebuttals for it all cannot be true.”

Book Of The Week

Wonders in the Sky:
Unexplained Aerial Phenomena From Antiquity to Modern Times

by Jacques Vallee &  Chris Aubeck

One of the most ambitious works of paranormal investigation of our time, here is an unprecedented compendium of pre-twentieth-century UFO accounts, written with rigor and color by two of today’s leading investigators of unexplained phenomena.

In the past century, individuals, newspapers, and military agencies have recorded thousands of UFO incidents, giving rise to much speculation about flying saucers, visitors from other planets, and alien abductions. Yet the extraterrestrial phenomenon did not begin in the present era. Far from it. The authors of Wonders in the Sky reveal a thread of vividly rendered-and sometimes strikingly similar- reports of mysterious aerial phenomena from antiquity through the modern age. These accounts often share definite physical features- such as the heat felt and described by witnesses-that have not changed much over the centuries. Indeed, such similarities between ancient and modern sightings are the rule rather than the exception.

In Wonders in the Sky, respected researchers Jacques Vallee and Chris Aubeck examine more than 500 selected reports of sightings from biblical-age antiquity through the year 1879-the point at which the Industrial Revolution deeply changed the nature of human society, and the skies began to open to airplanes, dirigibles, rockets, and other opportunities for misinterpretation represented by military prototypes. Using vivid and engaging case studies, and more than seventy-five illustrations, they reveal that unidentified flying objects have had a major impact not only on popular culture but on our history, on our religion, and on the models of the world humanity has formed from deepest antiquity.

Sure to become a classic among UFO enthusiasts and other followers of unexplained phenomena, Wonders in the Sky is the most ambitious, broad-reaching, and intelligent analysis ever written on premodern aerial mysteries.”

First published in 1932 (LoC)? Modified to include Sasquatch by artist unknown.

Seasons Greetings & Happy Holiday Festivities to all of our Anomalist, Fortean, and UFOlk friends and supporters from around the world.

This issue signals a departure from our past approach to “weekly” installments of the Anomaly Archives eNewsletter. We’ve done this latest iteration of the eNews for over three years now. We’re still going to be sending you anomalous emails but we’ll be experimenting with some new ways of doing that in the coming months … as we enter the ever liminal “Hindsight / MindSight” zone of the year 2020.

Things are shaping up to be very interesting next year for the Anomaly Archives. We hope to be making some big announcements soon about probable new monthly meetups, special cinema events, amazing lectures and much more.

ruth-l-miller-portraitIn the meantime, keep your eyes open for details about our upcoming Holiday Party that starts with special guest presenter, channeler Ruth L. Miller. This event is being cosponsored by the IONS Austin Community Group, INACS (Institute for Neuroscience And Consciousness Studies), and the Anomaly Archives. “Keep Top Eye Open” for the official announcement with all the details.

Psst … It’s happening Sunday, December 15th.

The Anomaly Archives presents

Paul Smith “Remote Viewing UFOs: Pitfalls and Promise”

September 5th, 2016

Paul Smith

“Using one mystery to try to explain another: That’s what seems to be happening in the perpetual interplay between remote viewing (RV) and unidentified aerial phenomena–popularly known as UFOs–space aliens, and everything connected to them in the popular culture. This confluence of RV and UFOs goes back almost to the beginning of remote viewing itself, and not just the notorious, but some of the most prominent and respected members of the remote viewing community have indulged. Impossible to fully capture in one evening discussion, I nonetheless introduce you to the general outlines of the controversy, sketch for you the interrelationships of some of the main figures and their claims, show you some of the more provocative and interesting results, and explain the advantages and shortfalls of employing remote viewing to ferret out the truth of extraterrestrial visitation.”

The Anomaly Archives Weekly Email Newsletter

July 5th, 2019 – Austin, Texas

Happy July-4th / Independence-Day Weekend!

We hope you all had a fun and safe July-4th and that you have a wonderful holiday weekend.

In this newsletter we have the usual assortment of amazing anomaly headlines as well as a new video from the Anomaly Archives. The video was something I stumbled across recently while double-checking a bunch of old VHS tapes that I thought were empty / blank. As many of you know, I was in charge of hosting and organizing the 38th annual National UFO Conference which was to be the 3rd NUFOC in a row to be held in Texas. The previous year’s event had been held in Corpus Christi and the year before that it was held in San Antonio. It was at that 36th NUFOC (in my birth-town of San Antonio) that I first met researchers James Moseley, Tom Deuley, Kevin Randle, and so many others. While I was attending that September NUFOC in 1999 I was staying with my grandparents and, until seeing this old local news coverage footage on one of those presumed blank VHS tapes, I had completely forgotten that my grandfather had recorded the news coverage the evening of the first day’s lectures. In fact, you can see me among the crowd of attendees in the earlier part of the KSAT-12 news footage. Also featured in the video are closeups of the print-flyer for the event showing the list of speakers, location, cost and summaries of the many speakers presentation topics. We hope you enjoy this flashback focusing on a Ufology from 20 years ago – check out the gallery of screenshots from that local news coverage and the flyer at our NUFOC-36 resource page.

Because of my revisiting this event through this “found footage” and flyer I was reminded of the wonderful collage art used for the print flyer which would later be used as the cover of the Spring 2000 edition of The Anomalist journal (No. 8) published by NUFOC-36 host and organizer Dennis Stacy (donor of collections to the Anomaly Archives) who is co-founder / co-publisher with Patrick Huyghe (seen at the beginning of the news coverage giving his Alien Horde lecture) of The Anomalist journal and Anomalist Books.

[BTW – We are in the process of acquiring copies of the entire catalog of books published by Anomalist Books!]

Since the end of 2018 the Anomaly Archives has been acquiring the personal library and research materials of Robert Joseph Durant. Bob Durant is mostly known for his advocacy of the 1947 Roswell Crash but he has a rich background as a Fortean / Anomalist. He was a huge fan of the works of Charles Fort and served on the board of cryptozoologist Ivan Sanderson’s organization, SITU: Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained. He was also fascinated with psychic phenomena and had become good friends with remote viewers Ingo Swann and Paul Smith. Among his materials were copies of The Anomalist journal featuring his articles on a personal experience with Stigmata and the psychic experiences of Malcolm-X.

Also within those copies of The Anomalist was issue #8 which I was pleased to rediscover contained Kevin Randle’s article (Red Herrings and Alien Abductions) that was sparked by the controversy of his book (which he was speaking about at that 1999 NUFOC event) that erupted on the old UFO UpDates elist of Errol Bruce Knapp’s (including my own contribution to the discussion): Abductee Demographics in the research of Randle’s & Estes’ book The Abduction Enigma. So of course I decided to feature 3 issues of The Anomalist Journal as our Book-of-the-Week!

Book Of The Week

The Anomalist Journal – Nos. 8, 9, & 10

by Anomalist Books

Excerpts from The Anomalist – No. 8: Spring 2000

FROM MERMAIDS TO LITTLE GREEN MEN:
THE PREHISTORY OF THE UFO ABDUCTION PHENOMENON

BY JERRY CLARK

“Does the available evidence sustain the testimony of today’s abductees that gray UFO beings were snatching people up decades ago? The evidence is not overwhelming. On the other hand, it is not entirely nonexistent.”

. . . And . . .

READING THE STRANGENESS:
SECOND-ORDER ANOMALIES

BY T. PETER PARK

“On the night of November 2, 1967, several people unknown to each other who had been drinking beer had very similar close encounters on roads near Ririe, Idaho with “little men” from UFO’s trying to forcibly enter their cars. Almost exactly ten years earlier, on November 6, 1957, spacemen from UFO’s tried to steal dogs from a boy named Everett in Tennessee and from a man in Everittstown, New Jersey. Are such sets of events mere coincidences–or do they reflect deep patterns with special meanings for their participants, or even for the world at large?”

. . . And . . .

THE BEST UFO CASE EVER?
A REVIEW AND UPDATE OF THE SOCORRO INCIDENT

BY PATRICK HUYGHE

“Until policeman Lonnie Zamora’s sighting made the news in 1964, all other accounts of meetings with the space people came from witnesses of dubious credibility and reputation. And their stories were laughable. Zamora’s story was different. He was a policeman, a highly credible witness. So with this case, the widespread feeling–even among UFO believers–that there was something absurd, if not ludicrous, about humanoids, simply crumbled.”

Excerpts from The Anomalist – No. 9: Winter 2000-2001

THE PSYCHIC LIFE OF MALCOLM X
by Robert J. Durant

The Saturday Evening Post summed up the conclusion of white America, and a substantial portion of black America, in this comment about the publication in 1964 of The Autobiography of Malcolm X: “If Malcolm X were not a Negro, his autobiography would be little more than a journal of abnormal psychology, the story of a burglar, dope pusher, addict and jailbird — with a family history of insanity — who acquires messianic delusions and sets forth to preach an upside down religion of ‘brotherly hatred.’”

Spike Lee’s motion picture about Malcolm X triggered a revival of superficial and mendacious media interest in the phenomenon of the man who was everything the Post said, but much, much more.

RED HERRINGS AND ALIEN ABDUCTIONS
by Kevin D. Randle

In July, 1996, at the MUFON Symposium held in Greensboro, North Carolina, Budd Hopkins was disturbed by my paper about pop cultural influences on the imagery of alien abduction. He approached me and said, “You’re not an abduction researcher!” I reminded him that he used information about an abduction I had investigated in his first book on the topic. I have been investigating alien abductions since the mid-1970s and apparently before Hopkins started.

Four years later, that same comment was made, even after having published a number of articles on the topic, and having written two books about abduction. The second of those books, The Abduction Enigma, written with Russ Estes and William P. Cone, has created something of a firestorm, with many attacking without attempting to understand the reason the book exists.

Excerpts from The Anomalist – No. 10: Winter 2000-2001

A Personal Account of a Stigmata
by Robert J. Durant
“As an airline pilot, I am required to take a physical examination every six months. This is a fairly simple test of blood pressure, hearing, vision and that sort of thing. The exam must be administered by a physician certified by the Federal Aviation Administration. FAA medical examiners are not that common, and those in my vicinity require an appointment, usually a month or so in advance. My flying schedule tends to be erratic and unpredictable, making it difficult for me to meet these appointments. The following events occurred in the summer of 1990. . .”

The Anomaly Archives Weekly Email Newsletter

Greetings fellow Anomalists / Forteans / Seekers!

Another month and a half has passed without this “weekly” email newsletter arriving in your inbox. It’s been a wild whirlwind of ordinary personal life situations keeping me from sitting down and banging out another one of these updates, and… I also went plummeting out of an airplane (thankfully strapped to someone with a parachute) recently! Yeah, that was crazy fun!

BTW – We’re Open, Thursdays and Saturdays 2-6pm!

For the past few months, with the help of several volunteers, the Anomaly Archives has expanded its weekly Open Public Hours to include Thursdays and Saturdays from 2 pm  to 6 pm. We hope you’ll plan your next visit ASAP and come check out our Amazing Archival Collections and check out a book to read from the Lending Library. You can always search our Anomaly-OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog). We invite you to drop by during those open hours, but we encourage you to…

Please Call Before You Visit: via Phone (512) 842-9046 or EMAIL.

Meanwhile… Wow! UFOs are BACK! And with a vengeance! As I alluded to in our last (April 15th) newsletter, “We may be witnessing a new renaissance in anomalistic / para oriented public events.” So keep your wits about you as we all try to navigate the “Frenzy in the Credulous Media” while doing our own investigating as best we can.

Over the past month and a half we’ve seen the passing of legendary paranormal investigator Lorraine Warren, UFO researcher / lecturer Stanton T. Friedman, as well as Texas Psychonaut, Roky Erickson:
Roky…
