ARCHIVES IN ART: AUSTIN ARCHIVES BAZAAR 2020 JURIED SHOW
The Austin Archives Bazaar is excited to announce its inaugural exhibition: Archives in Art, a juried art show that encourages Central Texas artists to use or be inspired by archival materials in creating their work. There are no submission fees, and accepted works will be exhibited at the Austin Archives Bazaar on April 19, 2020 and afterwards at Austin Central Library’s 4th Floor from April 27 – June 30. Central Library will be a stop on the WEST Austin Studio Tour in May! There will be cash awards for the jury’s choice and people’s choice winners.

New Monthly Meetup Second-Saturdays in 2020
Our first new monthly meetup (“Bring ‘em Back Amused. The Tale of Frank Buck and his Monkey Mountain”) was a fun-filled success! Thank you to all of our attendees. Our next monthly meetup will be Saturday, March 14th from 3-5pm. SMiles Lewis will lead the audience on a trip through the many diverse Realms-of-the-Anomalous. We hope you can join us!
The Anomaly Archives hosts a monthly public meeting the Second Saturday of each month. Meetings are 3pm-5pm so guests will have an hour before and an hour after to peruse the library and archives outside of the meeting times. The library will be open throughout its regular Saturday Open Hours from 2-6pm (so long as we have enough volunteers to staff it during the meeting). We recently discovered a new Austin-based UFO podcast / vodcast from a couple of local Austinites. It’s called UFO Garage Podcast! They just started back in June of 2019 and they are having a blast learning all about UFOs and becoming a part of the larger UFO community. Apparently, they had just discovered the Anomaly Archives a few days or weeks before I discovered them – so they were very excited when I reached out to say, “Howdy!” Then a few days later they came by the Anomaly Archives and did a short impromptu interview while checking out the collections. Within a few hours, they’d edited together the footage and posted the video. Check it out below in our VIDEO section!
Book-of-the-Week
This week’s book of the week is one of many by author and researcher Eugenia Macer-Story that we have on-file in the Anomaly Archives. I never had the chance to meet her (she was one of the speakers scheduled to present at my 2001 National UFO Conference) but was glad to know her through her writings and email communications and the one audio interview I did with her in 2008 for my Blue Rose Report webcast. She passed away in December of 2013.
If you aren’t familiar with her work you should check out this article by “WHAM” titled: The Yankee Magick of Eugenia Macer-Story.
Eugenia Macer-Story – Eugenia was a resident of Woodstock, New York. Born in Minneapolis, MN on January 20, 1945. B.S., Speech/Theater, Northwestern University, 1965. M.F.A., Columbia University, Playwriting, 1968. Professional psychic with private practice and author. She passed away on Tuesday, December 17, 2013.
Eugenia Macer-Story was a poet-playwright and visual artist whose work has been published and exhibited internationally. Her poetry chapbooks have been part of the Poets House poetry publication showcase for a number of years. She also wrote books on the supernatural and UFO experiences and her articles on the supernatural have been published in UFOs and Supernatural magazine and UFO magazine.

ABOUT AUSTIN ARCHIVES BAZAAR
Austin Archives Bazaar is a FREE biennial event organized by the Archivists of Central Texas since 2014. Austin Archives Bazaar 2020 will take place at Trinity Hall, 311 E. 5th Street, on April 19, 2020. Visitors will have the opportunity to chat with over 20 local archival repositories who table at the event, hear speakers share stories about their discoveries with archives, learn best preservation practices, win door prizes, and more!
THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE VISITING AN ARCHIVAL REPOSITORY
- For most repositories, a list of their policies and procedures will be available online in some form. Spend time looking over the archives’ website before your visit. Look for a “Plan Your Visit” link which will prepare you for what to expect, including registration steps and what items are prohibited from the reading room. Many archives have locker systems available to store items, but it’s not a bad idea to travel light.
- Be mindful of photography restrictions. Many archives allow the use of cameras, laptops and other personal digital devices, but restrictions may exist.
- Handle all materials carefully and keep the materials in order.
- Be prepared to pay for photocopies.
- Once you find materials to work with, talk to an archivist about how you will be using the item(s) so they can clarify any restrictions on use or copyright violations.

There beats in the hearts of many the yearning for adventure, and so, in 1911, to satisfy that need “Adventure!” magazine was created. It was filled with thrilling tales of travel, intrigue, and exotic occurrences.
It spawned a club of like-minded people who gathered to revel in the idea of adventure and all its tantalizing trappings — the Adventurer’s Club. Adventurers gathered every month to share stories of excitement and glory. Many interesting people have crossed the Club’s threshold, and it is high time that their stories be shared with a wider audience.
One of these adventurers was once a household word and an American celebrity whose very name was a byword for all things exotic and thrilling. This was Frank Buck of Gainesville, Texas, an animal collector who cared so deeply about the animals he rounded up for zoos that his motto was, “Bring ‘em back alive.” His passion for animals led him to fame and fortune, movies and mayhem. The things he managed to do and experience in his lifetime will both astonish and amuse.

Previous experience serving on the board of a nonprofit is preferred but not necessarily required. Residence within Austin (or even within Texas) is not required but certainly makes participating in quarterly board meetings a bit easier. This issue signals a departure from our past approach to “weekly” installments of the Anomaly Archives eNewsletter. We’ve done this latest iteration of the eNews for over three years now. We’re still going to be sending you anomalous emails but we’ll be experimenting with some new ways of doing that in the coming months … as we enter the ever liminal “Hindsight / MindSight” zone of the year 2020.
Things are shaping up to be very interesting next year for the Anomaly Archives. We hope to be making some big announcements soon about probable new monthly meetups, special cinema events, amazing lectures and much more.

Happy July-4th / Independence-Day Weekend!
We hope you all had a fun and safe July-4th and that you have a wonderful holiday weekend.
In this newsletter we have the usual assortment of amazing anomaly headlines as well as a new video from the Anomaly Archives. The video was something I stumbled across recently while double-checking a bunch of old VHS tapes that I thought were empty / blank. As many of you know, I was in charge of hosting and organizing the 38th annual National UFO Conference which was to be the 3rd NUFOC in a row to be held in Texas. The previous year’s event had been held in Corpus Christi and the year before that it was held in San Antonio. It was at that 36th NUFOC (in my birth-town of San Antonio) that I first met researchers James Moseley, Tom Deuley, Kevin Randle, and so many others. While I was attending that September NUFOC in 1999 I was staying with my grandparents and, until seeing this old local news coverage footage on one of those presumed blank VHS tapes, I had completely forgotten that my grandfather had recorded the news coverage the evening of the first day’s lectures. In fact, you can see me among the crowd of attendees in the earlier part of the KSAT-12 news footage. Also featured in the video are closeups of the print-flyer for the event showing the list of speakers, location, cost and summaries of the many speakers presentation topics. Because of my revisiting this event through this “found footage” and flyer I was reminded of the wonderful collage art used for the print flyer which would later be used as the cover of the Spring 2000 edition of The Anomalist journal (No. 8) published by NUFOC-36 host and organizer Dennis Stacy (donor of collections to the Anomaly Archives) who is co-founder / co-publisher with Patrick Huyghe (seen at the beginning of the news coverage giving his Alien Horde lecture) of The Anomalist journal and Anomalist Books.
[BTW – We are in the process of acquiring copies of the entire catalog of books published by Anomalist Books!]
Since the end of 2018 the Anomaly Archives has been acquiring the personal library and research materials of Robert Joseph Durant. Bob Durant is mostly known for his advocacy of the 1947 Roswell Crash but he has a rich background as a Fortean / Anomalist. He was a huge fan of the works of Charles Fort and served on the board of cryptozoologist Ivan Sanderson’s organization, SITU: Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained. He was also fascinated with psychic phenomena and had become good friends with remote viewers Ingo Swann and Paul Smith. Among his materials were copies of The Anomalist journal featuring his articles on a personal experience with Stigmata and the psychic experiences of Malcolm-X.
Also within those copies of The Anomalist was issue #8 which I was pleased to rediscover contained Kevin Randle’s article (Red Herrings and Alien Abductions) that was sparked by the controversy of his book (which he was speaking about at that 1999 NUFOC event) that erupted on the old UFO UpDates elist of Errol Bruce Knapp’s (including my own contribution to the discussion): Abductee Demographics in the research of Randle’s & Estes’ book The Abduction Enigma. So of course I decided to feature 3 issues of The Anomalist Journal as our Book-of-the-Week!

DurantThe Saturday Evening Post summed up the conclusion of white America, and a substantial portion of black America, in this comment about the publication in 1964 of The Autobiography of Malcolm X: “If Malcolm X were not a Negro, his autobiography would be little more than a journal of abnormal psychology, the story of a burglar, dope pusher, addict and jailbird — with a family history of insanity — who acquires messianic delusions and sets forth to preach an upside down religion of ‘brotherly hatred.’”
Spike Lee’s motion picture about Malcolm X triggered a revival of superficial and mendacious media interest in the phenomenon of the man who was everything the Post said, but much, much more.

RED HERRINGS AND ALIEN ABDUCTIONS
by Kevin D. RandleIn July, 1996, at the MUFON Symposium held in Greensboro, North Carolina, Budd Hopkins was disturbed by my paper about pop cultural influences on the imagery of alien abduction. He approached me and said, “You’re not an abduction researcher!” I reminded him that he used information about an abduction I had investigated in his first book on the topic. I have been investigating alien abductions since the mid-1970s and apparently before Hopkins started.
Four years later, that same comment was made, even after having published a number of articles on the topic, and having written two books about abduction. The second of those books, The Abduction Enigma, written with Russ Estes and William P. Cone, has created something of a firestorm, with many attacking without attempting to understand the reason the book exists.

A Personal Account of a Stigmata

“As an airline pilot, I am required to take a physical examination every six months. This is a fairly simple test of blood pressure, hearing, vision and that sort of thing. The exam must be administered by a physician certified by the Federal Aviation Administration. FAA medical examiners are not that common, and those in my vicinity require an appointment, usually a month or so in advance. My flying schedule tends to be erratic and unpredictable, making it difficult for me to meet these appointments. The following events occurred in the summer of 1990. . .”
