“At Coast to Coast, Alec Fernandes says the Area 51 Cover Story Raises More Questions than Answers. Fernandes offers other objections and suggests “the government’s attempt to end the mystery may have only deepened it.” In Pentagon Disinformation Has Been Fueling UFO Conspiracies for Decades, T.K. Randall notes the WSJ article’s contention that the AF promoted “UFO sightings” as explanations for actual U.S. stealth-fighter testing. We note that this new “stealth fighter” ploy recalls a 1997 assertion by National Reconnaissance Office historian Gerald K. Haines, still promoted by some, that [Project] “Blue Book investigators were able to attribute many UFO sightings to U-2 flights.” (See CIA’s Role in the Study of UFOs, 1947-90.) Intriguingly, both Dr. Bruce Maccabee, the late Naval optical physicist and ufologist, and “well-known UFO cynic” Robert Sheaffer debunked this claim in Leonard David’s January 14, 2015, article CIA About UFOs of the 1950s and ’60s: ‘It Was Us’. UFO report dates and U2 test flight dates didn’t match up. More is expected on this controversy. (WM)”
