Strange Accidents – Anomalies at the Edge of Perception

“When you invent the ship, you also invent the shipwreck; when you invent the plane you also invent the plane crash; and when you invent electricity, you invent electrocution… Every technology carries its own negativity, which is invented at the same time as technical progress.” – Paul Virlio
And when you invent new ways of seeing, you also invent new kinds of anomalies.
Later this month, on the 79th anniversary of the Kenneth Arnold sighting, I’ll be giving an invited presentation for the Anomaly Archives in Austin, Texas, exploring UFO/UAP as what Paul Virilio might call the accidents of total surveillance.
As sensor networks, data infrastructures, automated detection systems, and machine observation continue to expand the reach of perception, they increasingly generate objects and events that exceed established interpretive frameworks. Rather than asking what UAP are, this presentation examines how modern regimes of surveillance, detection, and hyper-communication produce anomalies as a structural feature of their operation and in turn how these anomalies become clothed in narratives that seek to close the gap in understanding opened up by their appearance.
From radar returns and satellite imagery to algorithmic classification and networked sensing, anomalous objects emerge at the edges of our intensified observational field.
UFO/UAP are more than merely mysterious objects in the sky, they are direct products of a historical transformation in perception itself.
. . .

This presentation will reconceptualize UFO/UAP as “accidents of total surveillance” and products of a historical transformation in perception. As sensor networks, data infrastructures, and automated systems extend the reach of observation, they increasingly generate objects that exceed established interpretive frameworks. Moving beyond debates over what UAP are, the analysis focuses on how modern regimes of surveillance, detection and hyper-communication produce anomalies as a structural feature of their operation.
