Susan Lepselter Awarded the 2017 Bateson Prize

The Society for Cultural Anthropology (SCA) is proud to award the ninth annual Gregory Bateson Prize to Susan Lepselter for her book The Resonance of Unseen Things: Poetics, Power, Captivity, and UFOs in the American Uncanny (University of Michigan Press). In this exquisitely crafted ethnography, Susan Lepselter explores how the uncanny saturates the everyday among believers in UFOs in the American West. Rather than objects of elite disdain or sideshow curiosities, Lepselter’s interlocutors emerge as poets and theorists whose reflections on odd coincidences and eerie happenings offer a “strange mirror” on the experiences of late empire and late capitalism. Lepselter’s subjects rely on elaborate conspiracy theories and casual hunches to inhabit a landscape haunted by violent colonial conquest and the presence of a vast, “secret” military base. Deeply invested in an American mythology of freedom, they palpate the edges of the felt, the seen, and the known as they go about their daily lives convinced of the presence of pervasive but out-of-sight, alien powers—technology, the market, the state, the extraterrestrial.In writing that hews closely to the forms of her subjects’ language and thought, Lepselter evokes the affectively charged sediment of stories and memories whose persuasiveness rests not on logical coherence but on a set of potent resonances across seemingly disparate domains of experience and action. Enfolding her readers in a dense tissue of narrative fragments, she conjures a structure of feeling in which people experience a sense of confinement and a longing for release. Class, gender, race, and regional history indelibly inflect this structure of feeling. Yet in treating stories as mutating communal property that is continuously claimed and repurposed through creative acts of telling, Lepselter refuses to pin narratives reductively to singular subject positions or fixed social locations that would definitively author or explain them. Deeply informed by a wide range of thinkers from Jakobson to Freud and Foucault, Lepselter never merely applies theory but rather allows her ethnographic material to bend and rework it in unsettling ways. Both in form and in content, The Resonance of Unseen Things challenges ethnographic conventions, inviting us to examine our expectations of the genre and to explore modes of writing intimately attuned to the subjects we engage. Thanks to the support of libraries participating in the Knowledge Unlatched initiative, an open-access digital edition of the book is also freely available to read. Exemplifying ethnography’s potential to illuminate the political through immersion in the mundane and the apparently marginal, The Resonance of Unseen Things casts a startlingly penetrating light on our current moment.

Another anniversary of 911 has come and gone. For better or worse, conspiracy culture has become ever more mainstream in America. Austin, Texas continues to be part of the epicenter of that growth because of folks like Alex Jones and others who grew out of Austin’s Community Access TV network, ACTV. Well the subjects of both paranormal and parapolitical aspects of the tragic events of September 11th, 2001 inform our selections of both Video-Of-The-Week and Book-Of-The-Week for this issue…

Back in 2015 I presented an informal lecture discussion featuring various videos related to esoteric aspects of September 11th. Among the videos I presented was a video montage I threw together as accompaniment to my 2005 audio narration of my 2002 Austin Para Times editorial. Well, I finally uploaded that video and have included it here as this issue’s Video Of The Week.

In 2005 I turned the editorial into the first episode of my 911-Podcast. Several years later that audio podcast was aired by a friend on 91.7-fm KOOP radio.In 2015 I created this video montage using that same audio in preparation for a brief informal presentation titled: “SynchroMystic-911: Deep ParaPolitics & Esoteric-Occult High-Strangeness Surrounding September 11th”

The first part of the audio deals with the very real and provable Covert Ops, Deep State, Parapolitical elements of the 911 events. The second part deals with the precognitive parapsychological psychic ripple effects that were psensed before and during the events of that fateful day.

The past few weeks have been filled with multiple personal synchronicities, many revolving around recently digitized videos (or the sharing of images) I’ve collected or recorded over the years spanning the mid-1990s to the early 2000s. Some have been pleasant reminisces while others have had unpleasant or surprising connections with the terrible incidents in Charlottesville and the massive public reaction to the Free Speech Rally in Boston. I talk about these synchronicities in last week’s episode of PsiOp-Radio (#187) that I host with long-time friend and researcher, Mack White. One of the recently digitized videos (not associated with any of those syncs) is featured below as our video of the week.

I’ve recently added several new videos to my various personal YouTube accounts, including a couple of videos at the Official Anomaly Archives YouTube Channel. This one (see below) was recorded from Austin’s Community Access TV network, ACTV, and features the artwork of Austin contactee artist, Josi Galantealong with a didgeridoo soundtrack (possibly created by Austin didgeridoo player, Loping Buzzard*). Both were frequent attendees of the Austin UFO Forum & Study Group and / or similar local para-oriented group meetings (Austin Mufon, Austin Art Bell Chat Club etc.) back in the 1990s. Around 2011-ish, Loping Buzzard showed up at the Anomaly Archives to donate some of his many UFO and paranormal books. He had a terminal illness and wanted to donate his collection which also featured materials from Josi Galante’s personal collection.

I last heard from Josi back in 2014 and suspect that she too may have passed beyond…We love and them both – Josi G. & L.P.

Review excerpt from New Dawn Magazine No. 36:

This remarkable book is presented by Fate magazine, and contains a wealth of information on UFO sightings, contacts and abductions, cattle mutilations and evidence of government shenanigans and cover-ups. Some of the topics covered include evidence from ancient scripture and occult writings of alien contact and ‘wars in heaven’, aspects of the cover-up of UFO sightings / contact and deliberate discreditation / ridicule of contactees and their supporters, U.S. government involvement in said cover-ups, etc. There is a reasonable amount of material from the 19th century, and the author manages to link untraceable predators which decimate farmer’s cows and chickens in the UK midlands to the cattle mutilators of the American midwest (an interesting link to the so-called ‘ABC’s’ (Alien Big Cats) said to plague British farmers to this day.) Charles Fort receives credit for mentioning UFO related phenomena long before it became something in the public eye, and the book reproduces a number of his hypotheses (we are cattle!) as well as presenting some of the bizarre cases he collected.

Andrews’ book on UFOs and Fortean weirdness is a difficult mix of metaphysical speculation and solid reporting. The texture of Andrews’ book is scattered and paranoid and he never lingers on a specific subject long enough for the reader to come away with anything of real investigative value. This is an enjoyable foray into strangeness and conspiracy theory, but not nearly the journalistic dynamite as Timothy Good’s “Above Top Secret.”

Book of the Week…Black Elk Speaks

Black Elk Speaks is a 1932 book by John G. Neihardt, an American poet and writer, who relates the story of Black Elk, an Oglala Lakota medicine man. Black Elk spoke in Lakota and Black Elk’s son, Ben Black Elk, who was present during the talks, translated his father’s words into English.^[1] Neihardt made notes during these talks which he later used as the basis for his book.^[2]

The prominent psychologist Carl Jung read the book in the 1930s and urged its translation into German; in 1955, it was published as Ich rufe mein Volk (I Call My People).^[3]

Reprinted in the US in 1961, with a 1988 edition named Black Elk Speaks: Being the Life Story of a Holy Man of the Oglala Sioux, as told through John G. Neihardt (Flaming Rainbow) and a State University of New York Press 2008 Premier Edition annotated by Lakota scholar Raymond DeMallie, the book has found an international audience. However, the book has come under fire for what critics describe as inaccurate representations of Lakota culture and beliefs.

In the summer of 1930, as part of his research into the Native American perspective on the Ghost Dance movement, the poet and writer John G. Neihardt, already the Nebraska poet laureate, received the necessary permission from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to go to the Pine Ridge Reservation. Accompanied by his two daughters, he went to meet an Oglala holy man named Black Elk. His intention was to talk to someone who had participated in the Ghost Dance. Mufon & Ufology’s Continuing Death Spiral … starting with the mass resignation of MUFON membership over the organization’s response to a former State Director’s online racist rant, and the resignation of more State Directors (Washington State’s James Clarkson) as well as the organization’s Director of Research over the lack of scientific rigor on display at this year’s annual symposium which focused on unverifiable testimony presented at the “Secret Space Program” MUFON conference.

“Anthology on aspects of UFOs with the emphasis on hypotheses. The editors review a number of views on UFOs in the first chapter. Arthur Tomlinson surveys historical sightings of UFOs in ancient Egypt, Biblical, and classical times through the 19th century. K.W.C. Phillips deals with “the psychosociology of UFOlogy,” emphasizing that what we are actually studying are reports (texts), not first-hand data. He emphasizes the religious, historic, and folkloric dimensions of UFOs and notes the presence of a strong psi factor. Robert Moore, in “Science v. Saucery,” tries to provide a traditionally scientific exploration of UFOs. His chapter is a good survey of the “normal” counterhypotheses, both objective and subjective, which could explain 85% of all sightings. For the rest, he sets forth the “Mundane-Synthesistic Hypothesis,” in which synthesistic is “defined as many separate factors cumulating into a single result” (p. 92). Roger Ford describes what appear to be cases of the government spreading “deliberate disinformation” (p. 106) about seeming UFOs. Therese M. Barclay describes some of the best sightings she and others have investigated and concludes that UFOs are real but do not make sense within our accepted worldview: “It might be that they are real in a way our present-day cosmologies can’t conceive” (p. 113). Joseph Dormer argues that “the origins of UFOs, and their alien occupants, probably lies within us” (p. 152). Charlotte A. O’Connor sets forth a “racial dream hypothesis” to explain UFOs, especially UFO abductions. In the concluding chapter, David Barclay points out that “ufology as it presently stands [is] a loosely interconnected series of belief systems from which anyone can choose on the basis of personal preference alone” (p. 172). He also feels that skepticism is the least defensible choice and the most counterproductive. He proposes a holographic virtual reality model as the source of UFOs. Taken together, the viewpoints expressed offer an up-to-date survey of UFO explanations and counterhypotheses that is both quite comprehensive, and in some instances, presented in some depth.”

Last week marked the 70th anniversaries of Kenneth Arnold’s famous sighting and the crash of a mysterious ‘whatsit’ outside Roswell, New Mexico. 70th Anniversary of the Birth of the Modern UFO Era

This week marks the 70th anniversaries of the two most seminal events in the birthing of the modern UFO era’s major myths: Kenneth Arnold’s sighting of a shimmering squadron of delta shaped objects over Mount Rainier, Washington and the crash of a mysterious ‘whatsit’ outside Roswell, New Mexico with alleged alien bodies recovered by the military. Both events occurred in the Summer of 1947, with the Arnold sighting cited as kicking off the American Flying Saucer craze and the Roswell newsflash only coming to prominence with the publication of The Roswell Incident (by Charles Berlitz and William Moore) in 1980.

I grew up believing in the classic myth of Roswell representing crashed saucers and pickled aliens scooped up and covered up by the US government but have since come to lean heavily towards the research documented by Nick Redfern in his two books: Body Snatchers in the Desert in 2005 and its recent follow-up, The Roswell UFO Conspiracy (May 2017). Both books detail a probable American project melding nefarious human experimentation with advanced avionics / nuclear radiation research. A sort of Project Paperclip (American importation of German Nazi scientists) meets Unit-731 (the Japanese version of Germany’s Dr. Mengele horrors) combining Fugo-balloons, unwitting human subjects (both Japanese and American), and Nazi Horten-brother flying-wing technologies. It’s a lot to take-in and no one wants to believe it but given the facts that we already know regarding each area of research (not to mention the CIA’s MK-Ultra sub-projects) it becomes all too plausible. Well, Nick Redfern is among the illustrious list of speakers presenting at one of two different UFO conferences being held in Roswell this year.

Given the sad state of UFOlogy this year (see our previous issue and this issue’s news headlines) it will be interesting to see what new information is presented at the two conferences being held. I will be attending the “Challenges to ET” conference hosted by Guy Malone that features Nick Redfern, Jack Brewer, Greg Bishop, Michael Heiser, and Joseph Jordan. I’ll also likely catch a speech or two at the Roswell Incident conference that is presented by the Roswell Daily Record newspaper which is set to feature presentations from Richard Dolan, Linda Howe, Nick Pope, Chase Kloetzke, Chuck Zukowski, Debbie Ziegelmeyer, Race Hobbs, David Marler, Marc D’Antonio, Alejandro Rojas, Courtney Brown, and Josh Gates.

You have undoubtedly come across news items alleging the discovery of a new mysterious body from Peru being touted as a mummified, possibly alien, body. Blogger and researcher Curt Collins (Blue Blurry Lines) writes:

“The remains of the dead should not be used as props for UFO promoters and entertainers like Maussan and Gaia. We’ve had the Star Child, Greer’s Sirius “Atacama Humanoid,” and when challenged about the BeWitness Slides, Maussan offered a bounty for the child’s body itself.
Forensic Anthropologists should be in charge of this kind of thing. Once the science is done, if there’s anything valid, share it with the world.
Until then, let the dead rest in peace. Don’t support the exploitation.”

I couldn’t agree more with Mr. Collins on this issue. You’d think folks would have learned by now, especially after the Roswell “Alien” Slides debacle promoted by Jaime Maussan and others fell apart in May of 2015. Yet the human will to believe continues, with many UFOlks looking for the next Smoking-Gun / Holy-Grail to prove their beliefs in ExtraTerrestrial visitation. The Close Encounters Man
How One Man Made the World Believe in UFOs

‘The Close Encounters Man’ tells the unlikely story of how the government’s astrophysicist debunker became the phenomenon’s most expert defender.

“If you’re jonesing for an extraterrestrial, you should check out The Close Encounters Man by Mark O’Connell. O’Connell, a writer for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and founder of the UFO blog High Strangeness, set out to write “a UFO book people wouldn’t need to hide from other people.” He found his ideal subject in J. Allen Hynek, the astronomer hired by the United States Air Force in 1948 to debunk the reports of strange objects in the sky flooding in from across the country. Eventually Hynek broke with his handlers and became the first scientist to lend credence to the UFO phenomenon. The author of 1972’s The UFO Experience: A Scientific Study, he would go on to found the Center for UFO Studies in 1973, present a speech on flying saucers to the United Nations in 1978, and develop the “close encounter” scale that would inspire Steven Spielberg’s popular Close Encounters of the Third Kind (“a huge boon to his work,” O’Connell told me. “They shot a scene where the little aliens grab Hynek’s pipe from him and stick it up their noses, but it was cut down to a six-second cameo.”)

In telling the life story of Hynek, the “astro-beatnik,” O’Connell winds up with a stunning panorama of the UFO movement—from fringe conspiracy theorists to amateur astronomers to agnostic scientists—as well as its colossal impact on pop culture and modern science. I recently spoke with O’Connell over the phone about Hynek’s unique story of skeptic turned believer, the scientific study of the inexplicable, and what makes a good UFO witness.”

Greg and Robbie also discuss the book and the need for new thinking on UFOs on Greg’s wedradio show. You can listen to that book-talk show at Greg’s Radio Misterioso website (MP3 podcast archive).

Some other news-of-note includes…

DramaRama in the UFO-Scene: MUFON State Director, John Ventre, demoted after public and membership outcry over his racially charged social media rant. Following a wave of complaints to MUFON about his personal public behavior the organization’s Executive Director issued a public statement: MUFON reaction to recent social media postings.

The statement caused another wave of criticism starting, as one would expect, within the comments section of the public response posting. Several comments were deleted before ALL of the replies were deleted and the comments section was closed.

Among the noteworthy responses to this situation:

Nick Redfern announced his withdrawal from all things to do with MUFON.

“Some of you may have seen all the controversy surrounding MUFON this past week or thereabouts. As a result of all this outrageous crap, I have told MUFON that I will no longer be writing my monthly column for their magazine, and I have severed ties with them. Period.” – Nick Redfern

James E Clarkson, MUFON Washington State Section Director issued his own public statement condemning Ventre’s rant and expressing solidarity with respect and non-discrimination.

North Carolina MUFON co-founder William Senter also expressed disapproval for the organization’s response to the situation and appears to be leaving the organization until a more appropriate response occurs.

Mark O’Connell, formerly an active MUFON investigator but also an open-minded critic of the organization has severed his ties with them over this series of incidents: UFO Fever.

Race Hobbs, Program Director of the KGRA Digital Broadcasting Station said, “after 10 years of service to the organization of MUFON, I have tendered my resignation… MUFON UFO Radio has been removed from the KGRA Roster.”

MUFON’s Director of Experiencer Research, Kathleen Marden, has expressed her position and is taking a stand against intolerance and contemplating her next move with regard to the organization. Mr. Ventre has been removed from several upcoming speaking engagements, had his community access television show cancelled, and been demoted from State Section Director to state treasurer and event coordinator. Ventre remains listed among MUFON’s “Inner Circle” for, “donating in excess of $5,000 in a single donation.”

David Lynch’s surreal Twin Peaks tv series is back with a vengeance, causing much discussion about this over-the-top oddball story that features Secret Societies, Mysterious Entities Feeding Off Humanity’s Pain & Sorrow, Drug Smuggling, Human Trafficking & Sexploitation, Strange Premonitions & Visions, Uncanny Owls, UFOs & Blue Book and the Precursor to the X-Files… FBI Regional Bureau Chief Gordon Cole’s “Blue Rose Cases.”

First Meeting of “The Third Door” Saturday, April 29th, 2017

A new series of monthly Anomaly Archives open discussion forum meetings called, “The Third Door” led by Anomaly Archives member John Hawkins will be meeting on the last Saturday of each month from 1-4pm.

The esoteric sub-genre called SynchroMysticism (coined by Jay Kotze in 2006) is still a relatively unknown arena related to attempts to interpret “Twilight Language.”

I’m honored to yet again be listed by Loren Coleman as being among the top Twilight Language Theorists. Among those listed within this year’s top 25 are deceased blogger and radical CyberPunk-Fortean & UFO-thinker, Mac Tonnies; author of The CryptoTerrestrials.

Greg Bishop’s Epic Adventures

I’ve known author and researcher Greg Bishop since the early to mid 1990s when we met through the alt media zine scene. We’ve featured his latest UFO book, It Defies Language, as Book-of-the-Week this time last year. Well he continues to amaze and inspire me with his dedication to anomalous subjects and this past month has been particularly noteworthy…

Greg recently hosted ParaMania 2017 (Flashback to 2016 Premier) in Los Angeles, giving guests a tour of some of SoCal’s weirdest sights and experiences. The final night Greg and guests did a special informal freewheeling “after-party” round-table discussion live on his Radio Misterioso show. The relaxed and intriguing conversations were made even more interesting by one of ParaMania’s founding members “calling-in” from 30,000 feet! This ParaMania attendee was flying home that night but managed to use the airline’s inflight wifi to stream the show AND skype-call live into the program! Greg also recently interviewed UFOs: Reframing the Debate contributor, MJ Banias. You should also check out Banias’ recent articles on his TerraObscura website on UFOs, Power Systems, and Modern Capitalism, plus Banias’ after interview article, “Involuntary Shapeshifters: The Collective Unconscious and Engaging A Non-Human Intelligence” where he reflects on that recent conversation with Greg Bishop on Radio Misterioso (MP3).

Another milestone from Greg’s audio archives relates to a special global holiday celebrated this past weekend … the Original Earth Day was MC’d by someone who would later be convicted of a grisly murder; Ira Einhorn. Radio Misterioso host Greg Bishop conducted the last public interview (June 24th, 2001) with Einhorn before his extradition from France to Philadelphia for the retrial of his conviction for the 1977 murder of Holly Maddux.

Media Explodes with Coverage of Alex Jones’ Child Custody Case!

For many years now I’ve watched the rise of alt-media celebrity and POTUS-45 confidante, Alex Jones, from his early days at ACTV (Austin Community Access TeleVision) and on KJFK (98.9FM) through the run up to Y2K and on to his meteoric rise to international celebrity post-911. Now Alex finds himself in a fight to retain custody of his three children (while he has another child on the way with his new wife) and the media are twisting the legal maneuvering of Alex’s lawyers attempts at separating his on-camera demeanor from his home-life personality by relating his InfoWars persona to that of a “Performance Artist,” with the media running with the misinformation that this is a declaration of his not actually believing what he publicly says on his shows and documentaries. While the mainstream media focus on this idea they are predicting he’ll lose masses of listeners / followers, but anyone who has watched him for any length of time knows he has always indulged in sketch-comedy and satire to convey his ideas; see this recent YouTube video collection of some of his most outrageous satirical comedy skits … if you can stand to watch him. 😉
