saucer-smear-october-20-2012Moseley Mystery – This past week the final issue of Saucer Smear (possibly the longest running Flying Saucer / UFO newsletter in North America) was finally delivered, posthumously… about four years after the passing of James Moseley. Past “non-subscribers” were abuzz with news of the October 20th, 2012 issue arriving in their mailboxes, affixed with the familiar typewriter-text “TO” address labels used by Moseley, but with no return address. Moseley was a true trickster and lived up to his many nicknames, including “Court-Jester of Ufology” (and worse), so for one last cosmic joke we raise a glass to Jim! As it turns out, it looks like this last act of stealth publication was the result of a grandchild; a comment from a visitor to the JimMoseley.com memorial site wrote on May 7th: “Jim has 7 grandchildren with whom he kept in touch with up until the end. His final “Saucer Smear” was mailed out to whatever list was available by 2nd girl Brittany Crain Hutchison just several months ago. It must have been a surprise to some as it was written in 2012! I am so glad there is this site.”

So of course, our Book-of-the-Week has to be Shockingly Close to the Truth! Confessions of a Grave-Robbing Ufologist by James W. Moseley & Karl T. Pflock.

And speaking of “Grave-Robbing Ufologists”…

One Year Anniversary of the Roswell Slides Debacle

My, how time flies; it was just about a year ago when the now infamous alien slides case was shown to be a terrible mis-identification of a mummified Native American boy’s remains as those of an anomalous alien being. UFO media mogul Jaime Mausan had been waging an unprecedented promotional campaign endorsing the images of the body as evidence of an alien being connected to the infamous Roswell event in the Summer of 1947. While the mundane nature of the corpse seems proven beyond a shadow of doubt, Mausan and his acolytes continue to carry the torch for this little body being something historic and non-human, while those Roswell obsessed researchers Don Schmitt and Tom Carey have waffled back and forth from admitting the “mystery” has been solved to suggesting there is still something “mysterious” about the body.

I was lucky to be a witness privy to the informal open source investigative group called the RSRG (Roswell Slides Research Group) who cracked the blurry placard prominently displayed in the glass museum case the native child mummy was photographed within. Besides Maussan’s media campaign it was the mysterious slides documentarian Adam Dew and company who had found the slides and approached the “Dream Team” … while that filmmaker has yet to produce his movie (rumor is he’s still considering it), another documentarian named Simon Sharman has produced Cosmic Whistleblowers (IMDB) which touches on the saga.

Meanwhile, from our Headline News section, check out this interesting article from late last year that I missed at the time but was alerted to thanks to the guys at the Mysterious Universe podcast. They mentioned this article from late 2015, Drones Are the New UFOs by Jason Koebler at Motherboard.Vice.com – and I highly recommend the MU interview with Clas Svahn on Ghost Rockets Research (Audio). You can inexpensively access the new documentary at GhostRockets.se. I’ve bought my copy and am looking forward to watching the main feature and the accompanying extra footage. If you are interested in the Ghost Rockets era of UFO waves you should definitely check out this documentary and interviews with Clas Svahn as well as controversial ex-Mufon director James Carrion’s take on the subject including his Rosetta Deception and Anachronism, plus a slightly different approach by Micah Hanks in his book The Ghost Rockets: Mystery Missiles and Phantom Projectiles in our Skies.

Finally, in other news … I’ve been following the developments of Magic Leap and its photonic digital lightfield signal chip creating MR (Mixed Reality, after VR and AR for Virtual and Augmented Realities) and in a news piece from WIRED one of the Magic Leap employees interviewed about the technology of creating light that tricks the human perception interface says, “I think its like dreaming with your eyes open” … and I couldn’t help but think of one of the points Stephen LaBerge repeatedly made during his presentation at the Sleep, Consciousness and Lucid Dreaming event that just happened at UT Austin this past weekend. He said:

“Dreaming is perception constrained by sensory input.
Perception is dreaming constrained by sensory input.”

One of the main points made in LaBerge’s lecture was the similarity / parity of perceptual experience between the waking and dream states. The technology and commentary from some of the Magic Leap employees really reminded me of that point. Here are some pictures from the UT Dream event.

“During our previous live PsiOp-Radio show I was informed by a friend of Jim’s ailing health. Shortly thereafter I learned of his passing on November 16th. Jim was an amazing soul who educated and entertained many a post-modern Fortean and Anomalist, myself included. I first met him at the 1999 NUFOC event in San Antonio, Texas. We began communicating about the possibility of my hosting the 2001 NUFOC in Austin. We met again at the 2000 NUFOC held in Corpus Christi, Texas. We interviewed him on PsiOp-Radio back in May of 2010. You can listen to that interview here. I wish I’d spoken to him again before his death. He will be missed.”

Smear’s James W. Moseley Dies

Moseley-1-1Fortean friend, ufology humorist, and writer James W. Moseley, 81, died Friday night, November 16, 2012. He passed away at a Key West, Florida, hospital, several months after being diagnosed with cancer of the esophagus.

Upon hearing of the death of Moseley, Anomalist Books publisher and editor Patrick Huyghe said: “He was one of the last remaining old timers from the golden age of flying saucers. Goodbye, Jim.”

The “old guard” of UFOlogy is quickly passing away before our very eyes. First there was John Keel, then Richard Hall, Ingo Swann, George Fawcett and most recently a man who remained for many years one of the most controversial and influential figures in all of UFO-dom, a personality who many loved and others equally despised.

When James W. Moseley passed away on November 16, 2012, at a hospital in Key West, Florida, he left behind a great many friends to mourn him. Though his name may be unfamiliar to the younger members of the UFO community today, he was for many years a most provocative voice in the field of UFOlogy, known for being a comic trickster as well as a serious researcher of flying saucer and paranormal phenomena who broke new ground in coverage of the subjects with his publications “Saucer News” and “Saucer Smear.”

This week we’ve got some quick links to portions of one of my favorite musical documentaries: Caribbean Nights: The Bob Marley Story (1982). I saw this documentary on television when I was in high school and have remembered it ever since. There were several memorable quotes from the film but there was one in particular that stuck with me all these years that I’d wondered about for a long time … that Bob was allegedly a clairvoyant. There’s not much out there about this but when I recently came across the entire unedited documentary online (the version I had seen was taped off of television and had a lot of material cut out) I finally saw a little bit more about his supposed psychic abilities. In one of the excised clips his mother mentions that he had been a palm-reader but gave it up for singing. Whether you were a fan of his music or not, Bob left a lasting impression on the world-stage, and some believe he was murdered because of his influence on the masses.

For this week’s Book-of-the-Week … Ragnarok: The Age of Fire and Gravel by Minnesota politician Ignatius L. Donnelly published in 1883. It is a companion to the more well-known work Atlantis: The Antediluvian World. Our copy is from the Bob Girard Collection. Just last week the man who made that donation happen, Tom Deuley, paid the Anomaly Archives a visit. We had a great time visiting with Tom and discussing the latest UFO sightings, MUFON, Bob Bigelow, and much more.

We have a slightly shorter list of Anomalous Headlines this week – but WOW – are they interesting! I particularly want to call your attention to the video of Robbie Graham’s 2014 lecture “UFOs, Hyperreality, and the Disclosure Myth” – especially the last 10 minutes!!! Also of import is the highly critical review by skeptic Robert Sheaffer of David Jacobs’ latest book.

Ragnarok: The Age of Fire and Gravel

Ragnarok: The Age of Fire and Gravel is a book by Minnesota politician Ignatius L. Donnelly published in 1883. It is a companion to the more well-known work Atlantis: The Antediluvian World.

Author’s arguments

In Ragnarok, Donnelly argues that an enormous comet hit the earth 12,000 years ago, resulting in widespread fires, floods, poisonous gases, and unusually vicious and prolonged winters. The catastrophe destroyed a more advanced civilization, forcing its terrified population to seek shelter in caves. As cave-dwellers, they lose all knowledge of art, literature, music, philosophy, and engineering.

He cites as evidence 900-foot-deep cracks radiating out from the Great Lakes, and stretching for many miles away. He admits it has been proposed that ice-sheets caused these cracks, but suggests that this explanation is improbable, likening them instead to ‘cracks in a window which has been struck with a stone.’ If ice sheets could produce such cracks, he asks, why haven’t similar cracks been found anywhere else on the globe? He adds to this a discussion of surface rocks in New York City, which seem to have undergone a radical chemical change—the feldspar has been converted into slate and the mica has separated out from the iron, as if they had undergone tremendous heat and pressure, as they likely would in the event that a comet struck the earth. He rules out other theories that could have caused this, such as nitric acid and warm rains, by pointing out that this is an isolated incident, whereas warm rains can occur at any time and place and there’s no archaeological evidence for the nitric acid’s origins.

He points out many legends and myths from various cultures, such as Zoroastrian, Pictish, Hindu, and Ancient Greece, that are all suggestive of a comet striking the earth, the earth catching fire, poisonous gases choking people, and floods and tidal waves swamping large areas. He also points out early culture’s tendency to heliotheism, which evolved from an insane gratitude to the Sun, after so many horrific days without it.

May 5th, 2016 – Perhaps the biggest problem preventing the legitimizing of UFO research is the rampant belief in “UFOs as Extra-Terrestrial Craft.” Many people who are skeptical about UFOs are so because of the behavior of UFO “true-believers” … they see in those believers the fervor of people caught-up in the uncritical trance of a religion.

Some writers have gone so far as to compare such believers to those technologically primitive cultures that worshiped the technology of more modern societies, aka Cargo Cults. During the 1990s, with the rise of popularity of TV shows such as The X-Files, these subject areas became so popular that it seemed every new commercial for a product or service began incorporating Alien and UFO themes.

In the Fall of 1994 (within the second issue of my ELFIS zine) I began an occasional column called “Cargo Culture” in which I and a couple of other contributing writers covered the ever-increasing use of UFO, paranormal, and alien-themed imagery within various Popular Culture media streams. In issue 6 (Summer 1998) of my ELFIS zine I introduced the ELFIS Cargo Culture Gallery. There I chronicled the many products and media references for such “Cargo Culture.”

With this week’s installment of the newsletter we are launching a new semi-regular section focused on such “Cargo Culture” – featuring links to some of those past ELFIS articles and gallery, as well as a brief blurb about a strange, unofficial UFO/Star Wars crossover product from my childhood, along with a link to a UFO themed video for the 2001 pop-song “Side” by the band “Travis.” I was very familiar with this song but had somehow never seen the very enjoyable video, until a couple of months ago when a friend sent me a link. We’ll feature more of this kind of “Cataloging of Cargo Culture” in future issues – I already have a wealth of material for this since people still continue to give me items featuring aliens and UFOs, despite my skepticism of an ET origin of said phenomenon.

Meanwhile, this week’s Book-of-the-Week is one that I had a couple of synchronicities with… late last year one of our local library volunteers was helping me re-organize the lending library collection and she came across the book Animal-Speak by Ted Andrews. It caught her attention because it features cover-art by her mother (Victoria Lisi), who happens to be a famous artist who has created many a cover of various Science Fiction / Fantasy books, including some with obvious UFO/Flying-Saucer imagery. Then a month or so ago, as a UT student was doing a preservation assessment of the Anomaly Archives (checking a random sample of books in the collection), he came across this book with surprise, saying it was a very sought-after book within the UT library system.

Also in this issue, we have the usual round-up of Anomalous Headlines, several of which deal with this issue’s theme of Cargo Culture, including tales of French villagers in the 1700s attacking a hydrogen-filled balloon (thinking it was a living animal), a man who thought a sex-doll was an angel fallen from heaven, and Chinese villagers who mistook a sex-toy for an unknown mushroom!

Cargo Cults & Para Culture

    We live in a world of emergent novelty. Or so we are told by Lyall Watson, Terence McKenna, Robert Anton Wilson and others. Human culture is one of the most novel systems the Earth has ever seen. It is a force which controls/influences every aspect of our lives. Billions of people’s Reality Tunnels are pumped in daily via the international TV media net. For the last couple of decades we have seen the rise of another net which will soon merge with the older audio/video networks-the information systems comprising all electronic processing technology on the planet. This epic union will hit overdrive as we witness the quality of sensory simulation increase. I am speaking, of course, of the emerging Virtual Reality technology. As the computer “images” become more completely and totally sensory, so too the interface of mind and machine will reach the level where there is no discernible physical connection. The obvious down side is the frightening possibilities that these technologies offer to would-be mind control conspiracists.

A connection has been drawn by observant researchers that UFO devotees, whether they be nuts and bolts techno-fetishists, space-brother wannabe spiritualists, or abductionologists seeking physical proof, exhibit similar traits as those “third worlders” who worship the cargo of us “moderns” (hence the term Cargo Cult). [see Cargo of the Gods by Paul Rydeen in Volume 1 of The Anomalist (PDF)] The analogy intimates humanity’s search for the UFO as philosopher’s stone, and is indicative of our hunger for divine product .This desire is evident in the need for divine space brothers as masters, so that we may attain enlightenment; the search for advanced alien technologies supposedly being researched in places like Area 51, Groom Lake, Nevada; and the quest for physical proof of the psychotronic implants of our abductors.

Appropriation of UFO Themes & Science Fiction Memes

Some time after the release of Star Wars my mom procured a small supply of fabric from a local crafts store that featured likely unlicensed representations of characters and vehicles from the Star Wars franchise. These apparently bootleg, knock-off images were overlaid upon a colorful scene featuring flying-saucers lifting up human shapes inside a blue-beam, an apparent “cloud-cigar” type of UFO ejecting baby ball-of-light orbs as well as levitating humanoids next to their astral light-bodies. Most of this imagery was lost on me at the time as I was very young and was just becoming aware of the UFO phenomenon in general. My mother had gotten the fabric because of my love of Star Wars – she created a small, thin pillow with the fabric and I’ve had it ever since. It wasn’t until recently that I realized that the sci-fi movie imagery was not part of the original artwork. Perhaps this early age exposure to such iconic UFO imagery is part of what led me down this path of being so obsessed with all things ufological.

Ceto’s New Friends  by Leah Haley (1994)

Review by Bob Girard in his Arcturus Books CataZine Newsletter Catalog:

cetos-new-friends“My jaw dropped so far down when I saw this that my belly button hurt for a week (though it might have been a sinking feeling in the pit of my gut causing the pain, I admit). This is a book for ultra-young readers by abductee / author Leah Haley (Lost was the Key). It has a total of 281 words in the text. It’s apparent intention is to introduce toddlers to alien abductions early (say, age 3 or so), before they find out the hard way — later in life — via trauma, ruined lives, etc., and to make the introduction a friendly one, in which the toddlers apply their innate trust in all things and all beings to the very monsters who are going to stick long needles into their bellies, ram huge contraptions up their behinds, empty their brains, make them pregnant and then rip out the fetuses, cut them, scrape them, inflict unspeakable pain on them and tell them (if anything at all) ‘it is necessary that we do this.’

Of course, none of those things ever happen to the two tykes in the book — and that’s what strikes me as being the ultimate Big Lie that one could ever inflict upon a totally impressionable mind: the idea that the greys are our friends. Sorry folks — I think it’s a bad idea to fill tiny little heads with Santa Claus just because you want to see ‘em glow with happy anticipation around Christmastime. It’s bad to stuff Jesus, heaven and hell into all-trusting minds. April 18th, 2016 – Another week and another wave of classic-era UFO writers “crossing over”… first we got word of MIB / Men-In-Black mythos creator Albert Bender passing and then came notice of Trevor James (UFOs as Amoeboid Space Critters) Constable having passed as well.

[EDIT: This morning as I’m preparing to send out this issue I get word from Loren Coleman that he just got word that UFOlogist Robert Hall (brother of deceased UFO researcher Richard Hall) apparently passed away back in 2013.]

Trevor Constable’s ideas about UFOs as living creatures have always been appealing to me; though this fascination has not translated for me to modern “Rod” & “Orb” photography phenomena. Back in the Fall of 1998 I reprinted and linked to some other writers speculating along these same lines; two articles by Andrew Gaze from Jim Kieth’s Dharma Combat zine as well as an exploration of the idea by a then modern software developer. “Science and religion are considered the two great schemas for understanding existence. We will be exploring how science provides a “naturalistic” understanding of the universe, and how religion can be recast from the naturalistic perspective.

We will begin with the social brain, exploring how being a social animal shaped the evolution of our brains, and how religion evolved as part of this process. We’ll continue with its connection to group selection in evolution. The initial focus will be on hierarchical social structures and how warfare could be intertwined with religion and tribal thinking in general, through group selection.

Bruce Naylor holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science and has worked for over 30 years in the field of gaming technology. He previously taught at Georgia Tech, UT Austin, and Rutgers. Dr. Naylor spent 10 years at AT&T Bell Labs Research and invented Game Engine Technology used in many games, including DOOM, Quake, Half-Life, and Call of Duty. He has also started game and simulation technology companies. Bruce has many interests in science, foremost being the Science of the Brain.”

Back in the 1990s when I was briefly publishing my E.L.F. Infested Spaces zine I met fellow Texan, Bernie Nelson, who claimed to be a victim of psychotronic mind control. April 6th, 2016 – So I DID end up going to Dallas this past weekend for the ParaMania un-conference! A wonderful time was had by all. Because I was out of town I had very little time to work on this newsletter. Therefore it’s little skimpier on the Anomalous Headlines this week.

In lieu of our usual number of news headlines, I’ll opt for some brief descriptions of the ParaMania event in Dallas…

  • UnConference “a loosely structured conference emphasizing the informal exchange of information and ideas between participants, rather than following a conventionally structured program of events.“

Back in September of 2015, a fan (Steve Ray) who frequently called into Greg Bishop‘s live Sunday-night Radio Misterioso show, began proposing an informal gathering in Dallas, Texas for past guests and current fans of the show to meetup in person. Then in early October, a special live dual-simulcast of Greg’s Radio Misterioso and Tim Binnall‘s Binnall of America shows featured the official announcement of ParaMania. Also in October, I had the pleasure of meeting face-to-face with Steve Ray at the 2015 Secret Space Conference held in Bastrop, Texas. [BTW – the organizers of that event are holding the next Breakthrough Energy Movement Conference at the same location May 28-29. Early Bird Registration is happening now.]

Organized as an “UnConference,” this was a very small, intimate, FREE event designed to allow attendees to fraternize with radio show hosts Greg Bishop, Tim Binnall, and any and all past guests of the shows as well as fans of the shows – with a possible lecture or two from some of the notables. The name of the event was partly inspired by the WrestleMania event which was also occurring that weekend in Dallas (and to which our event host, Steve Ray, had invited to pay for tickets). As it turned out, other authors and radio/podcast show-hosts such as Joshua Cutchin (author of A Trojan Feast: The Food and Drink Offerings of Aliens, Faeries, and Sasquatch) and Micah Hanks (host of various podcasts including The Gralien Report and author of such books as The UFO Singularity, The Ghost Rockets, The Complete Guide to Maverick Podcasting and others), Miguel Romero (aka Anomalist-Artist “Red Pill Junkie”), Tina Sena (whip-smart writer at BoA)  Roejen Razorwire (Project Archivist podcast) AND OTHERS traveled to Texas for this event.

Folks who made the trek to Dallas enjoyed leisurely para-oriented tourist activities such as the obligatory trip to Dealey Plaza and The Sixth Floor Museum that carries the torch of the official mainstream “Lone-Gunman” / “Oswald-Did-It” non-conspiracy. Attendees also took a trip to the nearby Aurora, Texas cemetery where Surprise Guest Jim Marrs regaled folks with the strange tale of that town’s crashed UFO and buried alien body. Then later the true die-hards were treated to a special alien-themed party at a local “Castle / Mansion” featuring inflatable aliens, big green alien headed balloons, napkins with alien faces, etc. Local prolific writer / researcher Nick Redfern had hoped to attend but was unable to due to transportation difficulties.

The real meat of the weekend (for me at least) was the actual “UnConference” held at a nearby community recreation center close to the hotel. There we were regaled with brief lectures from Greg Bishop, Joshua Cutchin, Micah Hanks, and even our host Steve Ray. The festivities were MC’d by Tim Binnall and the atmosphere was fun and informal with lots of give and take between the presenters and the audience members. Audio, photos, and video of the presentations was recorded by many of those present and may be forthcoming. Some of the pictures are already online at the Facebook event page as well as lots of photos and videos at the personal pages of the attendee’s. Greg Bishop gave a “Show & Tell” with personal anecdotes and photos from his recent excavations into his Excluded Middle magazine and Project Beta / Bennewitz research days. He spoke about his interactions with the Reverend Ivan Stang, Richard Metzger, Gabe Valdez, and the Mirage Men author and documentariens, as well as fellow zine-sceners who went to the infamous Texufornia Kook-Outs at which Greg once famously faked out his friends with a Ufaux sighting of our own. He also brought original hand-written correspondence between Paul Bennewitz and other UFO researchers!

Joshua Cutchin presented his A Trojan Feast lecture based on the research he published last year in his excellent book. Cutchin’s material and presentation were excellent and reminded me of his and my appearance on Tim Beckley’s Unraveling the Secrets show about a year ago. Check out his book!

Micah Hanks educated and entertained the attendees in his inimitable style. Hanks spoke about one of his more recent books which I’d been wondering about for some time… The Ghost Rockets: Mystery Missiles and Phantom Projectiles in our Skies.

Last, but certainly not least, was a presentation by ParaMania Host, Steve Ray. Ray broke his silence on a years-long research project that he and another fan of Greg Bishop’s Radio Misterioso had been working on involving attempts to create / engineer synchronicities during Greg’s radio show. A fascinating attempt at creating, categorizing, and cataloging meaningful coincidences!

Overall, everyone seemed to have a wonderful time and the camaraderie was deep with many professing how inspired the event made them feel. Many have expressed a desire to hold more of these types of events in the near future and sequels seem inevitable … ParaMania-2: Electric Boogaloo, Coming Soon!

The UFO Experience: A Scientific Inquiry

For a time, Hynek was the iconic image of the skeptical UFO researcher. He’s still a source of much fascination and controversy among Ufolks.

His reputation as a skeptic turned believer is a part of the standard UFO history yet there are still mysteries that swirl around him. Was he aware of the Pentacle Memo,Project Stork, or the alleged disinfo campaign against Paul Bennewitz?

Perhaps new information or final answers to these questions can be found in the latest volume of Hynek’s protégé’s personal memoirs, Forbidden Science – Volume Three by Jacques Vallee … “Journals of personal research written from 1980 to 1989 by a French-born astronomer and computer scientist interested in UFOs and paranormal phenomena.”

In the 1990s, when I was knee-deep in anomalous fringe-culture, I had come across the works of the nasally-voiced Terence McKenna through the psychedelic rave video Alien Dreamtime (by Ken Adams). I’d read an article or two by or about Terence but it was always something else to actually hear him speak. Years later I’d read this week’s Book-Of-The-Week selection, but I still remember coming across the trippy audio version of the book about he and his brothers adventures in the Amazon; where they were looking for the Spirit-Vine, Ayahuasca, but instead found the alien mushroom. It’s a fantastic tale and the audio version is filled with rain-forest noises and zany sound effects. Be sure to check out the links to digital scans of that book as well as streamable “Talking Book” versions.

As usual, we have a treasure trove of anomalousHEADLINES linked to articles of note from the past few weeks. Here in Austin, Texas we are in the midst of the annual Traffic-Jam known as SXSW. One of the few blessings during these Ides of March is the fact that it coincides with Spring Break, and so the incoming hordes are slightly off-set by the absent school aged kids and their parents clogging the roads. But there are always interesting things afoot during this “South By So What” season, and this year is no different. As a survivor of a mass shooting (The day madness went on parade – San Antonio Express / DANGER: Parade of Mother’s Intuition by SMiles Lewis) I’m very interested in seeing the latest documentary about Austin’s infamous 1966 UT Tower Shooting. It’s getting good reviews and the clips I’ve seen look very well-done and respectful. I’ve met at least one of the survivors featured in the film and he, like me and others, have grave concerns about the upcoming synchronicity of the… Texas campus carry law will take effect on 50th anniversary of Charles Whitman shooting at UT(MySanAntonio.com). Also in our HEADLINES section … Satanic Panics and rumors of ritual child abuse. At last month’s public meeting there was a lot of talk about tales of elite parapolitical pedophile trafficking and abuse networks. Human trafficking and child abuse are things we KNOW occur. Allegations of SRA (Satanic Ritual Abuse) have rightly been characterized as failures of law enforcement through bad interviewing techniques used with the alleged child-victims and witch-hunt-like round-ups of the accused. Hundreds of convictions from the 1980s have been overturned and it does appear that many of these cases were not actual examples of abuse. Yet we know of far too many other cases where the abuse was real, was ritualized, was part of a network trafficking in children and young adults. Among the threads discussed during last month’s meeting was the infamous case of “The Finders” (What is the Finders Cult? – Stuff They Don’t Want You To Know – HowStuffWorks YouTube Video). In 2008 I interviewed Len Bracken, one of the few people to ever actually meet with and interview the head of “The Finders.” We spoke briefly about what he found; you can hear that interview at this link: Blue Rose Report interviews Len Bracken (mp3). Being an Account of the Author’s Extraordinary Adventures in the Devil’s Paradise

This Publishers Weekly review pretty much sums it up:

In 1971 ethnobotanist McKenna (The Archaic Revival), his brother Dennis and three friends boated to a town in Amazonian Colombia, seeking a hallucinogenic plant that enables the Witoto tribe to talk to elf-like “little men.” In psychedelicized ravings interspersed with diary excerpts, McKenna records their experiences after ingesting mind-altering mushrooms and other psychoactive plants.

A flying saucer slowly flew over McKenna’s head; he calls it a “holographic mirage” of a future technology. Dennis had a revelation about a “psychofluid” that pervades the universe. McKenna flashes forward to Hawaii in 1975 where mantis-like creatures from hyperspace attack his lover, and flashes back to his tantric lovemaking in Tibet and to Indonesia where unrepentant Nazi scientists tried to recruit him in 1970. He posits the existence of a particle of time, the chronon, which conditions matter. A bizarre book.
