Through A Magickal Lens: Exploring the Paranormal by Means of Occult Practices

There is a profound and intrinsic connection between magick, magickal practices and extraordinary human experiences. The link between these was made by well known paranormal researchers Jacques Vallee, Allen Hynek, John Keel, Jenny Randles and others who have studied esoteric writings and consulted with occultists and magickal thinkers as part of their research. This connection has also been made by some experiencers who, like me, see their extraordinary encounters as having informed their spiritual life and in my case my witchcraft.
For three decades I have conducted in person and online outreach to those who have had spontaneous and deliberate extraordinary encounters with a strong interest in the weirdest of the weird. My approach to these experiences and my own encounters is phenomenological, in other words, acceptance of the reality of the experience without judgment on its nature. This perspective gives me the freedom to push the boundaries within my own research and use unconventional, fun and creative ways in my investigations of the paranormal.
This presentation will explore the historical and current intersection of occult practices and extraordinary human experiences. And will give you examples of how you can investigate the paranormal using occult methodology like psychic questing, automatic writing and painting, séances, tarot and an experimental model of conjuring.
Magick is a form of knowledge and its practice allows us to glimpse and accept a profound reality where the paranormal is fully engaged.
Susan Demeter is a Canadian writer and artist. She is the author of Cosmic Witch: Magic Witchcraft and the Supernatural, founder of Paranormal Studies and Intuition, and a co-creator of the UFOlogy Tarot. Susan has conducted scholarly research on behalf of the Defence Studies Department of the Canadian Armed Forces College in Toronto, Canada on the topic of UFOs, and for the The Koestler Parapsychology Unit at the University of Edinburgh – EUROPSI. The themes of her writing, research, art, and spirituality incorporate her lifelong interest in exceptional human experiences, social history, mysteries, and cosmic magic.
